Developing cyber awareness

RangeForce is a cloud-based cybersecurity training platform where individuals and teams develop their skills across a wide range of threat scenarios, from foundational exercises to advanced team-based simulations.

The brief
The platform had a retention and engagement problem. Users were completing assigned tasks and leaving — there was no clear “aha moment” drawing them deeper into the product. Analytical data was insufficient, leaving the team making assumptions about user behaviour rather than acting on evidence.

My role
Principal UX Designer, responsible for end-to-end UX strategy, research, design system development and the conception and delivery of new product features — working closely with Product, Engineering and Customer Success across a 24-month programme.

Research

Two distinct user groups were struggling in different ways. Administrators had no meaningful visibility into their teams — no dashboards, no progress tracking, no way to benchmark performance. Learners found the platform functional but uninspiring, with no clear sense of direction or progress.

To address the data gap, Hotjar was installed and reviewed regularly — heatmaps and session recordings gave the team its first real window into how users were actually behaving on the platform. Monthly calls with key customers were scheduled through the Customer Success team to surface pain points, gather feedback on proposed ideas and build a direct line between user insight and design decisions.

Ideation
The creation of the Defense Readiness Index (DRI), added context and value to a companies cyber training development.

A rating from 1-5 would be given to a company based on a detailed survey and existing user data. From there a target score would be assigned with clear guidance on how to achieve their target.

Visual language
The platform felt very transactional. Users logged in, achieved what they were assigned and logged out. Images and colours were very sparse on the platform before changes were made. But with the creation of a design system and the review of all components, colours and iconography combined with new illustrations, elevated the platform, creating a much more engaging user experience.

Beyond that the tone of voice was reviewed and a copywriter employed to create a consistent voice that embodied the brand by being was encouraging and inspirational.

Conclusions
Often working within the technical constraints within the organisation a 24 month strategy was implemented with steps taken across the board to address the problems.

User onboarding was optimised, reducing the previous sign up process from four emails, taking both time and causing confusion to one email, ensuring new customers accessed the platform in under a minute.

With the design system successfully implemented for both light and dark modes and a tone of voice in place, RangeForce are well placed to continually advance their platform based on insights and good practice.

I’ve had the pleasure to work on a great number of projects, but some of them can’t be shown publicly. Please feel free to get in touch if you’d like to see something that isn’t here.

Enough talk, let’s work together
