Tone of voice
A cloud-based cyber-security training platform. Users have the ability develop their skills for a variety of threats in both individual and team-based exercises.
Problem
Company struggled to identify the “Aha moment” in the platform and this was made clear in users behaviour.
Analytical data on customer behaviour was insufficient, leading to assumptions and guess work.
Question
How do we get a better understanding of our users and their needs?
Research
Administrators lacked reporting dashboards and insights into their teams progress. Learners struggled to find suitable courses and modules, reporting that the platform “functional” but uninspiring.
Solution
Ideation
The creation of the Defense Readiness Index (DRI), added context and value to a companies cyber training development.
A rating from 1-5 would be given to a company based on a detailed survey and existing user data. From there a target score would be assigned with clear guidance on how to achieve their target.
Visual language
The platform felt very transactional. Users logged in, achieved what they were assigned and logged out. Images and colours were very sparse on the platform before changes were made. But with the creation of a design system and the review of all components, colours and iconography combined with new illustrations, elevated the platform, creating a much more engaging user experience.
Beyond that the tone of voice was reviewed and a copywriter employed to create a consistent voice that embodied the brand by being was encouraging and inspirational.
Conclusions
Often working within the technical constraints within the organisation a 24 month strategy was implemented with steps taken across the board to address the problems.
User onboarding was optimised, reducing the previous sign up process from four emails, taking both time and causing confusion to one email, ensuring new customers accessed the platform in under a minute.
With the design system successfully implemented for both light and dark modes and a tone of voice in place, RangeForce are well placed to continually advance their platform based on insights and good practice.
